Gym Cleaning Automation Case Study

How CC1 helped a large global fitness club improve cleaning quality, reduce labor pressure, and create a cleaner, more attractive member experience.

Project Background

CC1 is Pudu Robotics’ first commercial cleaning robot for professional floor care, integrating scrubbing, sweeping, pushing, vacuuming, automatic charging, automatic water refill and drainage, gate access, elevator riding, and cross-floor operation in one solution.

In early 2024, the manager of a large global chain fitness club approached Pudu to evaluate robotic cleaning solutions. The brand is known for its high-quality service, full-featured fitness environment, and strong customer reputation. The facility operates 24/7 and includes multiple functional areas such as cardio zones, strength zones, rest areas, reception, and changing-related transition spaces.

Pain Points

  • The gym has heavy foot traffic and multiple peak periods throughout the day, while operating 24 hours a day, making cleaning tasks highly demanding.
  • Dust, water marks, sweat stains, footprints, drag marks from equipment, and debris are difficult to detect visually and hard to fully cover across dispersed zones.
  • If dirt and residue are not cleaned in time, they accumulate and become much harder to remove.
  • Heavy workloads and member complaints contributed to staff turnover. New cleaners often lacked training and familiarity with cleaning procedures, reducing consistency and efficiency.

Site Characteristics

  • Typical stains: sweat stains, footprints, disinfectant residue, and drag marks from equipment.
  • Site size: total on-site area about 1,800㎡, with robot cleaning area about 1,000㎡, representing roughly 56% of the site.
  • Equipment density: gym equipment layouts are typically compact, and equipment zones often account for 60%–70% of total area.
  • Cleaning zones: long corridors between equipment, rest areas, reception, and changing-room transition spaces.
  • Deployment: CC1 ×1 in scrubbing mode and workstation ×1 for automatic charging and automatic water refill/drainage.
  • Peak hours: 6:10–7:30, 10:00–11:00, and 12:00–13:00.

Cleaning Model Comparison

Category Traditional Manual Cleaning Human + Robot Collaboration
Cleaning staff 3 people 1 × CC1 + 1 cleaner (only for pre-cleaning obstacle removal)
Cleaning frequency 1–2 hours per day, no clear standardized frequency Multiple area-cleaning tasks scheduled during off-peak hours, achieving one full-floor wash per day
Coverage preference Partial spot cleaning, difficult to achieve full coverage Cleaner spends 5–10 minutes removing obstacles, then CC1 performs full-route autonomous scrubbing across all designated cleaning areas

Deployment Challenges & Solutions

1. Equipment Structure in Sensor Blind Zones

Many gym machines use suspended support frames underneath, which creates obstacle-avoidance blind spots for most robots. CC1 addressed this by using its built-in map editing tools to create virtual walls around all fitness equipment. These virtual walls allowed the robot to recognize equipment zones as protected obstacles and operate smoothly without disturbing users.

2. Mixed Floor Materials in a Single Cleaning Task

The customer wanted the robot to handle multiple floor types in one task, such as tile areas adjacent to rubber or PVC flooring. CC1 supports multiple accessories and adjustable task parameters. For tile and PVC mixed zones, a soft scrubbing roller was selected, with maximum water output, maximum suction, and very low running speed at 0.3 m/s. After several cleaning cycles improved baseline cleanliness, the task was optimized to medium water flow, medium suction, and 0.5 m/s, maintaining clean results on both surfaces.

Results & Business Impact

The deployment significantly improved cleaning quality, reduced labor and consumable usage, and enhanced both member satisfaction and brand perception.

Performance Highlights

  • Cleaning quality improved: In one month, CC1 completed 157 cleaning tasks and performed near-daily full-coverage floor washing across approximately 1,000㎡.
  • Cleaning efficiency improved: Manual full-coverage cleaning efficiency was about 250㎡/hour. CC1 achieved an actual cleaning efficiency of 350.14㎡/hour.
  • Labor savings: Cleaners only needed 5–10 minutes daily for pre-task floor organization, saving about 125 labor hours per month, a reduction of approximately 92%.
  • Water savings: Manual cleaning would consume about 2,691L/month over the same 26,905㎡ area, while CC1 used only about 403.658L/month, saving about 2,286L or roughly 85%.
  • Detergent savings: Monthly detergent usage dropped from about 12.12L to 2.7L, saving about 9.42L or approximately 77%.

Customer Feedback

After the gym formally introduced CC1 in the second half of 2024, the human-robot collaboration model significantly outperformed the previous fully manual approach. CC1 enabled full-area daily floor washing without time limitations, automatic charging, and automatic water refill/drainage. This greatly reduced staff pressure and allowed cleaners to focus more on equipment-detail cleaning.

With multiple accessories and task modes, CC1 effectively removed fine dust, sweat stains, dirt piles, and other debris on different flooring materials. Its efficient cleaning technology and controlled water usage reduced water and detergent consumption by nearly 80%, helping the gym strengthen its green and healthy brand image.

Follow-up feedback showed that staff turnover dropped to nearly zero. Management was highly satisfied with CC1’s performance. Nearby families and children often stopped outside to watch the robot “perform,” helping attract new memberships. Existing members also felt the robot made the entire gym feel more dynamic, cleaner, and more attractive.
